Counselling FAQs

How will I know if I should go to counselling? (click for the answer)
Answer: Counselling can be helpful for a variety of issues that may range from straightforward to highly complex. Don’t be concerned if your problem doesn’t seem serious enough; what’s most important is that it is something that you want to work on improving or changing. It is almost always better to deal with problems sooner rather than later.
What will be expected of me? (click for the answer)
Answer: I will ask you questions to get a better understanding of the issues you are facing. I want to know what you are looking for to decide if I am a good fit for you. On or before your first session, you will sign a contract that will outline confidentiality, the counselling process and what to expect; I will explain this to you and answer any questions you have. If you don’t think I’m the right counsellor for you, don’t hesitate to let me know, I can help you find someone who will be a better fit for you.

How will I know what to talk about? (click for the answer)
Answer: Thinking about going to counselling may feel intimidating, and you may feel nervous about sharing the details of your life with someone you don’t know. I’ll guide the process and try my best to help you feel at ease. I’ll help you decide when counselling ends and on appointment frequency changes. During our sessions, I’ll focus on creating a trusting relationship by listening, giving feedback and asking questions. It’s okay to share only what you are comfortable with; let me know if there are topics you don’t want to talk about.
How will a feel during and after sessions? (click for the answer)
Answer: Change can be uncomfortable! There may be times when you feel emotional, and it’s common for you to tear up or cry during therapy. This is okay and healthy. Some sessions may bring on a sense of relief and positivity, while others may leave you feeling emotionally low. It’s important to tell me how you feel so that I can better understand your experience and make changes if needed.
